RARE! Ibanez EC 50 Parrot Box (Japan, 1994) Speaker Simulator & Direct Box/

And direct box/DI made in Japan in 1994! Also affectionately known as the parrot box. Perhaps named after the bird that can mimic the human language and many other sounds. I have tried connecting it to a compatible power supply (t he power supply is NOT included in the sale) and it seems to work very well!

All knobs and buttons respond well! The headphone output is a bit noisy, but this is perhaps normal in this model, I don't know.

The general output on the other hand is very quiet and seems perfect to me. Cosmetically it is in excellent condition! The Parrot Box can be used as an amp+speaker simulator, or just as a speaker simulator depending on what else you are using with it. It can be used as a pedal or as a table top unit; the big'bump' on top is the bypass footswitch and there is a duplicate control on the front panel. There is an input selector giving'Preamp','Guitar' and'Distortion' options.

You should select the'Preamp' option if - as the name suggests - you are feeding it from a separate preamp; this mode is the least coloured and the Parrot Box basically functions as a speaker simulator. If you are playing a clean guitar (with no distortion pedals), then the'Guitar' option is for you; in this mode, a preset EQ is engaged producing a sparkly, chimey clean amp sound. When using distortion pedals, the'Distortion' option is the best; in this mode, a preset EQ is engaged but with more of the upper frequencies filtered off to prevent your distortion sounding fizzy and fake.

There is an Input gain control to match the Parrot Box to the signal source. Once you have chosen your mode, then you have the choice of open or closed back speaker cabinet emulation which give very different overall effects. Next is a'Reactance' control which affects the overall tonality. The final (main control) is the'Hush' noise gate - "licensed from Hush Systems" this is the same circuit as used in Rocktron's range of Hush processors. Lastly, there is a headphone output with volume control to allow for silent practising.

For direct recording or use through a PA system in place of an amp the Parrot Box functions superbly; it is easy to get some really great sounds using it. On the rear panel you will find the input, output, balanced output and footswitch (for remote switching when rack mounted) jacks and the DC input.
